When it comes to R&D, Austria is one of the most dynamic countries in Europe. Together with Sweden - and ahead of Germany - Austria leads the ranking of European research nations. Austrian R&D intensity is currently 3.1% whereby Vienna's is even higher, at 3.7%.

With the highest density of multinational firms engaged in R&D, the Vienna Region is the nation's research hotspot. At the same time, innovation intensity among its SMEs is significantly higher than the EU average. A wide-ranging network of research institutions augments the efforts of future-oriented enterprises: the more than 2,200 R&D facilities in the Vienna Region employ around 57,000 people, approximetaly 37,000 of whom are scientists.
