The Institute of Science and Technology (IST) Austria was established in the Lower Austrian city of Klosterneuburg ten years ago. IST Austria is committed to delivering excellent performance and conducting cutting-edge basic research and graduate education in the physical, mathematical, computer, and life sciences.
What is so special about this institution: its core principles were distilled from the world’s most successful systems and ideas for research institutes. IST Austria enables scientists to pursue their interests without predefined research topics and provides ample opportunity for creative development. Research on campus is not divided by departments or boundaries; communication and collaboration are encouraged across scientific fields.
The concept has been a great success ever since! IST Austria is able to compete with the best of the best in the world: with every other research proposal to be accepted, IST Austria has been awarded a total of 34 ERC grants, well-funded and prestigious grants of the European Research Council. When it comes to ERC grants, IST Austria is clearly the No 1 in Europe with by far the highest success rate, leading in front of such big names as the Weizmann Institute, ETH Zurich or the universities in Cambridge and Oxford.
Today IST Austria accommodates 182 doctoral students under the supervision of 53 professors from all over the world. The amount of published scientific work is truly remarkable with 1,844 student and research publications.
Nevertheless, IST Austria is still not satisfied with their accomplishments: by 2026, up to 90 research groups will perform research in an international environment on a state-of-the-art campus with an additional research building.
