The Vienna Region (Vienna, Lower Austria, Burgenland) recorded 28.4 million overnight stays last year, with the highest annual growth in Vienna (+1.1 million), the most liveable city in the world.
Countries of origin: A particularly large number of guests came from Italy, Spain and France, but Germans, Austrians, Americans, Chinese, Russians and Swiss were also above the average of visitors across countries. The British were seen less frequently than last time. Tourists from the Czech Republic, Slovakia and Hungary particularly appreciate the proximity to the Vienna Region. On average, the guests stayed for three nights.
5-stars and shopping: Luxury hotels are particularly popular with Americans, Chinese and Japanese. China and the US are also leaders among non-EU countries in terms of money spent on shopping (China: average of 942 euros / USA 704 euros in Vienna in 2018 ).
New direct connections and flight plans favor the accessibility of the Vienna Region from these regions. Austrian Airlines also recorded another passenger record in 2019 with around 14.7 million passengers.
According to Wien Tourismus, it is important that the ecological footprint of tourism is kept as low as possible and that the satisfaction of guests and locals remains high. A survey of Wien Tourismus among the Viennese population shows that 9 out of 10 respondents are positive about tourism.
